Bloomberg News confirms that stock market was rigged

So now do you believe me?

The stock market was rigged.

It has been a little lonely telling this story over the past few years.

But now that another news organization has finally gotten off its lazy butt, I’ll tell it again:

Under former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, confidential government information was regularly leaked to select people on Wall Street.

As I’ve explained many times before, the Post got hold of Paulson’s telephone records back in 2009. And the phone logs show that Paulson, the former head of Goldman Sachs, regularly spoke with influential people on Wall Street with whom he shouldn’t have been communicating. These phone calls could have been — let’s use the word “enriching” — for the recipients.

Among his regular phone buds was Lloyd Blankfein, who, for example, spoke six times with Paulson on Sept. 18, 2008.

That was a day of great market turmoil and — while there is no way of knowing what the two men spoke about — the calls did coincide with a major turnaround in stock prices.

That was just one example.

There were many recipients of Paulson’s calls. And the conversations went on for years and were especially frequent when Washington needed a friend on Wall Street.

All an investigator — not to mention a prosecutor — would have to do is check the trading records of the firms on the receiving end of Paulson’s chats to determine if there was any suspicious activity.

And, guaranteed, they’d find it.

That’s what I’ve been writing for the past two years. And it is the biggest story that’ll ever be broken in the history of American financial journalism — the U.S. markets are rigged, with the elite and connected getting a distinct unfair advantage over the rest of us schlumps.

Enter Bloomberg Markets magazine last week with a story headlined, “How Paulson Gave Hedge Funds Advance Word.”

It addresses the morning of July 21, 2008 — a time when both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, government-sponsored organizations that buy most of the nation’s residential mortgages, were in serious trouble.

Bloomberg says Paulson met with reporters and editors of The New York Times that morning and told them he expected an audit of Fannie’s and Freddie’s books to give the financial markets confidence.

But he told a different story when he met that same day with hedge-fund managers at the office of Eton Park Capital Management.

“Around the conference table were a dozen or so hedge-fund managers and other Wall Street executives — at least five of them alumni of Goldman Sachs Group Inc.,” according to Bloomberg Market’s January issue.

Quoting a fund manager at that Eton Park meeting, “After a perfunctory discussion of the market turmoil … the secretary [Paulson] went on to describe a possible scenario for placing Fannie and Freddie into ‘conservatorship’ — a government seizure designed to allow the firms to continue to operate despite heavy losses in the mortgage markets.”

Paulson explained further how the publicly traded stock of both companies would be wiped out under the move.

Bloomberg Markets said the fund manager in attendance who gave the magazine this information “was shocked that Paulson would furnish such specific information — to his mind, leaving little doubt that the Treasury Department would carry out the plan.”

The fund manager said he left the meeting, called his attorney and was advised not to trade any Fannie or Freddie stock, because Paulson had given him non-public information.

What else is new?

By giving confidential information to a roomful of traders, Paulson had to understand he’d influence the price of Fannie and Freddie stock and, by extension, the whole market.

He’d also be giving the people receiving that information a chance to cheat — to rob public investors who weren’t lucky enough to be invited to such meetings.

And that brings me to last week.

According to other journalists’ reports, the Federal Reserve voted on Monday, Nov. 28, to approve a financial bailout for Europe using our dollars. That’s the same day that the stock market staged a strong rally, which turned out to be only a preliminary event to the 400-plus point surge the Dow would have two days later — after the rest of us found out about the European bailout.

Was it just a coincidence that the stock market rallied nicely on the day of the Fed vote? Or was information from that Fed’s Open Market Committee leaked by someone to friends on Wall Street?

Only a few people know what happened on Nov. 28.

But this much I do know: Whatever games are being played between Washington and Wall Street must stop, or the American capital markets will cease functioning. Nobody with any sense will participate in a market that’s controlled by greedy people looking out only for themselves.

The second thing I know: Journalists need to start doing their job in rooting out corruption like this.

Bravo to Bloomberg Markets magazine. It’s about time at least one publication woke up.

NATO Tankers Destroyed In Pakistan

Militants attacked and destroyed at least 22 oil tankers parked in Pakistan

8 December 2011

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — Militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons attacked and destroyed at least 22 oil tankers parked in Pakistan, carrying fuel for NATO troops in Afghanistan, a senior Pakistani police official told CNN.

At least seven militants on motorcycles took part in Thursday night’s attack, said police official Hamid Shakeel. All seven escaped the scene, he said.

The attack took place at a terminal just outside of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, where the trucks had been parked since November 26, Shakeel said.

On November 26, the Pakistani government shut down both NATO supply routes through Pakistan to Afghanistan in protest of a NATO airstrike that had killed 24 Pakistani soldiers earlier in the day.

The airstrike was the latest blow to an already stormy partnership between the United States and Pakistan and plunged relations into perhaps the worst crisis since the two countries agreed to join forces in the fight against Islamist militancy after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Roughly 40% of supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan travel through Pakistan.

During the past two years militants have increasingly targeted NATO tankers and supply trucks in an attempt to disrupt two key supply routes and undermine the NATO mission in neighboring Afghanistan.

The attacks have forced NATO to increasingly use alternative routes through central Asia.

Police said there were no reports of any injuries immediately after the attack.

2 Killed, Including Police Officer, Near Virginia Tech

8 December 2011

RICHMOND, Virginia – Virginia Tech officials have confirmed a police officer and one other person were killed in a shooting on campus.

There are reports that a suspect may be in custody.

A campus-wide alert tells students and faculty to stay inside and lock doors.

The shooting comes the same day as Virginia Tech is appealing a $55,000 fine by the Education Department in connection with the university’s response to a 2007 rampage that left 33 people dead.

The suspect is described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, gray hat with neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.

A message left with the university wasn’t immediately returned.

Campus police referred all questions to the university.

A student gunman killed 32 students and faculty and then shot himself on the campus in 2007.

Sensenbrenner-Impeachment May Be Only Way To Get Truth From Holder

8 December 2011

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, a former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee where Attorney General Eric Holder testified on Thursday, suggested that impeachment of administration officials involved with Operation Fast and Furious may be the only way to bring the scandal to a close.

In a heated exchange between Sensenbrenner and Holder during Thursday’s Judiciary Committee hearing, Sensenbrenner said impeachment is one option on the table if Holder and the Justice Department continue to withhold information from congressional investigators.

Sensenbrenner didn’t specify which administration officials he thinks could face impeachment proceedings, or if Holder is among them. But he did say the drastic measure would be a last resort.

“There is really no responsibility within the Justice Department,” Sensenbrenner said. “The thing is, if we don’t get to the bottom of this — and that requires your assistance on that — there is only alternative that Congress has and it is called impeachment, where our subpoena powers are plenary and there can‘t be any type of legal immunity or privilege that can be asserted on that.”

“But if we keep on getting pushed down the road and the can keeps getting kicked, and we don’t get closure to this, what is Congress to do so that we don’t spend all our time in court arguing privilege?” Sensenbrenner continued. “That is not a way to get at the truth.”

Much to the chagrin of the committee’s ranking Democrat, Michigan Rep. John Conyers, Sensenbrenner said he has “done more impeachments than anyone else in the country, and it is an expensive and messy affair, and I don’t want to go this far.”

Conyers jumped in afterward to insist that he — not Sensenbrenner — has conducted more impeachments than anyone else.

Shots Fired At Virginia Tech; Officer Reported Shot-Déjà vu

BLACKSBURG, Va. —  A police officer was shot at Virginia Tech on Thursday morning and campus officials warned everyone to seek shelter.

“We don’t know if the suspect fled or the extent of the injuries to the suspect or to the officer,” NBC News’ Pete Williams told MSNBC TV.

“This was a traffic stop on campus,” Williams said. “It was not someone walking around firing shots.”

A Virginia Tech alert described the suspected shooter as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with a neon green brim and a maroon hoodie, and carrying a backpack.

A Virginia Tech alert said the suspect was last seen walking toward McComas Hall, which is the main gym on campus, about two blocks from Lane Stadium.

In the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, 33 people, including the mentally ill gunman, were killed on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007. The massacre in a classroom building began at 9:40 a.m. when Seung-Hui Cho chained the doors and killed dozens before committing suicide.

Shots Fired, Alert Issued At Virginia Tech-Again

Virginia Tech website reports an active campus alert at its main Blacksburg campus after shots reported fired at a campus parking lot.

There were 32 people killed on the campus in 2007.
